Can you tow an electric car if the battery has reached 0%?
Yes. When an EV’s traction battery drains completely, the vehicle automatically engages the parking pawl and locks the parking brake. Our drivers use portable power packs to energize the 12V auxiliary system so that the center console touchscreen can be accessed to select Tow Mode. If the computer remains offline, our drivers place slick composite skates or auxiliary roll dollies under the drive wheels, allowing the vehicle to be winched smoothly onto our flatbed without damaging the electric drivetrain.
Why can’t an EV be towed using a traditional wheel-lift tow truck?
Dual-motor and single-motor electric vehicles do not have a neutral mechanical disconnect between the wheels and the motor rotors. If two wheels are lifted while the other two roll on the pavement, or if any drive motor spins without the high-voltage cooling system running, the magnetic motor creates uncontrolled electrical energy that will overheat and ruin the inverter and stator. Flatbed transport is the only method approved by EV manufacturers.
Will your straps or hooks scratch my aero wheels?
No. We use heavy-duty, over-the-tire soft nylon straps and wheel netting that contact only the rubber tread. We do not use metal chains, hooks, or J-hooks near your rims, brake rotors, or cosmetic aero wheel covers.
How do you tow a Tesla with a dead 12V battery?
If the 12V or 16V auxiliary battery is flat, the front hood and doors will not open electronically. Our drivers follow Tesla’s factory protocol by applying external 12V power to the jumper leads located behind the front bumper tow eye cover.
